February 27, 2007Colour No 5 – Unbleached Titanium
February 27, 2007I found a great read, by Mark Golden, on how unbleached Titanium White made it into artists acrylics and became a useful colour in it’s own rite. The article goes on to talk about how Golden Colour has gone on to produce a colour they call “Titan Buff” which is now an industry standard. He talks about particle size, which means that the colour will reflect light differently, and mentions that their colour has a bit of iron oxide in it to make the white a little warmer.
I am fascinated by the concept of producing a warm- but not yellow – white. I’m afraid that I’m producing a “post” blend by adding umbers to white rather than using an individual pigment as Golden Colour does. Here’s Colour No 5.
A New Colourant Dispenser
February 24, 2007Providence Paint has just acquired a used colourant dispenser. I’ve been looking for one for over a year. This one has 16 cannisters; our current one has only 12. This will give us the capacity to add colourants that I know we are missing and that means that we will be able to increase the range of colours that we mix.
However…. the dispenser hasn’t been given any love in a long, long time. The colourant in it is horrible and has clogged it up. It is gooey, and plastic and has comepletely siezed up some of the paddles that rotate to keep the colourant mixed. We are having to strip the cannisters down and completely overhaul it. It’s a messy job, and more than involved than we thought it would be. I’m worried that we won’t be able to put it back together again, too.
Also the colours of some of the colourants in this machine look awful. They are not as intense or as clear as I think that they should be. This is another reason why we have to comepletely strip back the cannisters, so that when we fill it up with new colourant it won’t be contaminated by any of this old stuff.
Colour No 4 Russet
February 5, 2007Ok guys and gals, this is a colour that we have used on some of the walls of our shop. We’ve called it “Russet”. It does remind me of a russety apple, a brown brushed with greeny/yellow.
Here is the Colour No 4 – Russet, photographed with with and black.
It is a little more crisp, like the thumbnail photograph of the walls of the shop than it is in the photo of the brush out.
